Lately, in the news it’s clear how damage the climate crisis has been causing worldwide with disasters wreaking havoc. One hot topic catching peoples interest is the rise, in wildfires frequency and intensity. These fires have torn through areas of land wiping out homes and leading to the loss of wildlife.
A tragic event that received a lot of attention in the media was the bushfire that ravaged Australia in the part of 2019 and early 2020 known as the “Black Summer.” This unprecedented disaster scorched around 18. 6 Million hectares of land. Claimed the lives of least 33 individuals while devastating about 3 billion animals. The impact of this calamity was not limited to Australia it reverberated globally as the smoke, from the fires reached far as South America and Antarctica.
The rise, in wildfires is believed to be caused by factors such as climate change and human actions like land use practices and urbanization activities impacting habitats adversely.Findings show that the combination of temperatures and prolonged droughts alongside weather conditions has significantly contributed to the rapid and uncontrollable spread of wildfires, across various regions.
Given the escalating frequency and severity of wildfires, in times it’s crucial for us to act promptly to lessen their effects and avert catastrophes. Governments, local communities and individuals need to collaborate on adopting land management methods allocating resources, for fire prevention and firefighting efforts and curbing greenhouse gas emissions to tackle the underlying issues of climate change. By placing importance on preserving our environment and embracing steps to address wildfires we can protect our planet for the generations to come.
